The Seattle Pécs Sister City Association (“SPSCA”) is one of the newer groups associated with HAAW. Think of us as an extension of HAAW with the same goals. Since our joining we have already collaborated with HAAW on events such as the October 23rd Commemoration, when pianist Angelo Rondello performed; Ti Ti Tabor; and the popular wine tasting event.
SPSCA is also associated with the City of Seattle as one of their twenty-one sister cities. Seattle is enormously proud to be a leader in promoting sister city relationships. Each sister city is organized by a separate sister city association such as Pécs where we organize programs, activities, and cultural exchanges with local Seattle members and friends around the world.
Pécs is a beautiful city located in southwest Hungary. It is a large city with a population of around 150,000. They are known for their large university that is the fifth oldest in the world; nearby is the Villany-Siklos wine route home to many famous award winning Hungarian wines; the statuesque neo-Romanesque thousand year-old St. Peter and St. Paul Roman Catholic Basilica with its four towers, stunning coffered ceiling and magnificent organ; the Zsolnay Museum displaying beautiful porcelain and stoneware objects along with Eosin glazed pottery; they were recognized as the 2010 Cultural Capital of the world along with Istanbul, Turkey.
As mentioned above, we want Hungary to be showcased around Washington state, to show Hungarians and non-Hungarians the beauty of the country, the culture, the magnificent music, and talented musicians, and let everyone know that Hungary has a significant history and continues to play a vital part around the world.
